I learned about Dr. Kristen Race’s Mindful Life website and program today at The Mindfulness Summit. Once again I’m bubbling with ideas for my speech-language pathology practice with children and with persons with brain injury as a coach. I talk about the importance of attention and awareness so much in both of these contexts. Each time I work with my students who are affected by brain-based delays and disabilities I witness how their attention to the task at hand makes all the difference in their ability to perform. Likewise, persons with brain injury who are aware of their brain-based difficulties with communication are best able to cope, perform, and learn new strategies.
In addition, I think Rice’s mindful parenting approach is right on target for young parents to put into practice with their children every day. Parents yes, and all of us to put into practice with ourselves and each other. I recommend a look at her Mindfulness Summit interview, TED Talk, website, and book, Mindful Parenting: Simple and Powerful Solutions for Raising Creative, Engaged, Happy Kids in Today’s Hectic World.
